The Nobles of the Sky, also known as the Nobles, are the highest floating sky islands of Onfractus. Exclusively resided by elves, the six cities of the Nobles are connected by the stream and falls of the Great Fountain. The collective population is estimated to be just less than 10,000 (as of 810SR) and is comprised of only the most elite and hierarchical families. The Coin of the Noble Mint is produced and regulated by the Nobles, and is guarded greatly.
As elves explored the early world of Onfractus, they seemed to naturally gravitate to the various floating isles of the sky. Finding that their magic allowed them to reach the skyward landmasses that others could not reach, many elves began to gather on the highest islands and quickly became very exclusionary. None but the most skilled in arcane magics and rare trades could be among the populace - save be as a servant. Soon, the richest of the elves in this area declared themselves the Nobles. As the other elves among these islands followed suit, they began to be known collectively as the Nobles of the Sky.
Without many a source of food easily available to these landmasses so far up, trade was necessitated. In the earliest days of the Marine Regiment, the Nobles of the Sky used their magics to negotiate and arrange trade with the merchants of the sea. Providing spell books and magical defenses, the Nobles received food, lumber, and other necessities by way of the fountain streams and magical transportation. As the Marine Regiment grew in power, the Nobles supported their efforts and began the first standardized currency - the Coin of the Noble Mint (circa 350SR).
With the Nobles of the Sky regulating trade to all sky islands, their power and influence grew. For half a century, there was no alternative to their influence. However, with the invention of the airship around 410SR, the Nobles began to quickly lose grasp on the lower islands, and the Realm of Wynpeiros was formed. The new trade realm was a crushing blow to the Marine Regiment, and the Nobles power was greatly diminished. However, as regulators of the standard currency, the Nobles were able to ensure that trade would continue to benefit them.
As Wynpeiros trade flourished, the Nobles of the Sky began to withdraw, making their services harder to come by; academies of magics allowing few pupils through their doors, enchanted items and weaponry only available in expensive auctions, and regulated coin only changing hands for items of great value. Living among the Nobles was seen as a great privilege, and a sign of exceptional social class.
With the discovery of electrical technology around 730SR, the Nobles of the Sky were intrigued with this new magic-like power and attempted to divine its secrets. Unsuccessful in this inquiry, the Nobles frequently import this technology from the United Quarry for personal use.
The primary imports and exports of the Nobles of the Sky are as follows:
Imports
Electric technology, exotic trade, entertainment, processed and prepared livestock, fine foods, airships, servants
Exports
Standard currency, enchanted weapons and tools, fine linens and clothing, exclusively high end items and artifacts, books and study tools
Trade with the Nobles of the Sky is often conducted indirectly of the Grand Baron through various aides and servants. Trade relations with the Marine Remnant allow for many imports, but Wynpeiros trade is also a frequent option.
